SABAH ¨C The East Malaysia Growth Pole¡ The Key Platform for Sourcing of Machinery & Industrial Automation Supply and Services.
Sabah¡¯s growth manufacturing 9.8 pc over 1994-2004, lower than Sarawak, which grew at 15.7 pc, and Peninsula at 11.7 per cent. As of 2004, Sabah contributes to 3.2 per cent of Malaysia¡¯s total outputs. By companion, Sarawak contribute 6.3 per cent with the balance 90.5 per cent, coming from Peninsula up to 83 per cent come from five sectors, namely: food, apparel, wood, metal and furniture. Manufacturing currently contributes up to 13 per cent of Sabah¡¯s GDP and has been so far for the past five years. Between 2001 - 2005, the manufacturing sector growth in Sabah was 9.7 per cent, against the GDP growth at 5.3 per cent.
The implementation of Sabah development corridor (SDC) will accelerate Sabah¡¯s economic growth through aggressive development of the tourism, agriculture and manufacturing sector. On the manufacturing aspect, (SDC) will focus on capturing high value in the manufacturing industry through promotion of downstream processing activities, the strategy for the manufacturing sector is to attract world-class companies to anchor and accelerate the growth of downstream manufacturing activities, leveraging on Sabah¡¯s rich natural resources such as palm oil, oil and gas, minerals and timber as feedstock.
In this regards, Manufacturing Sabah 2007 attracted credible investors in the manufacturing sector through the total number of manufacturing projects approved was lower than in 2006. A total of 65 manufacturing projects were approved last year with proposed investment amounting to RM 3.54 billion and providing 4000 over job opportunities.
The food-manufacturing sub-sector, including palm oil processing, attracted the most number of projects with 17 approvals amounted to RM 248 million, followed by chemical products with eight approval amounted to RM 527 million. At the third place was furniture and fixture (RM 20 million) and electrical & electronics products (RM 175 million) sub-sectors with six approvals respectively. The other sectors were basic metal fabrication sub-sector with five approvals, wood and wood products, plastic products, non-metallic mineral products, beverage industries, paper, printing and miscellaneous industries.
Sabah is strategically located in the vicinity of countries which are resource-rich including the entire sultanate of Brunei, 10 provinces in the Indonesia island of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Iran Jaya as well as Mindanao and Palawan in Philippines. These countries with land area of roughly 1.54 million square kilometers are home to about 65 million people. Kota Kinabalu, as the main gateway for Sabah, provides efficient air and sea linkage to regional markets with the completion of the new Kota Kinabalu International Airport and SBCP. The upcoming SITEXT will also significantly increase trading activities within the region, making Sabah an important regional hub.
